Jamaica lies 90 miles(145km) south of Cuba and 118 miles (190km) west of Haiti. Its capital city, Kingston, is about 571 miles (920km) southeast of Miami. At its greatest extent, Jamaica is 146 miles (235km) long, and it varies between 21 and 52 miles (35-85km) wide. With an area of 10,911 square kilometres, Jamaica is the largest island of the Commonwealth Caribbean and the third largest of the Greater Antilles, after Cuba and Hispaniola.

Most visitors already have a mental picture of Jamaica (Greater Antilles) before they arrive: its boisterous culture of reggae and Rastafarianism; its white-sand beaches; and its lush foliage, rivers, mountains, and clear waterfalls. Jamaica's art and cuisine are also remarkable.

Yet Jamaica's appealing aspects have to be weighed against its poverty, crime, and racial tensions, the legacy of colonial rule and subsequent political upheavals. Jamaica Is a former British territory located in the British West Indies

So, should you go? By all means. Just be prudent and cautious. The island has fine hotels and savory food. It's well geared to heterosexual couples who come to tie the knot or celebrate a honeymoon. And Jamaica boasts the best golf courses in the West Indies, some of the finest diving waters in the world, and good river rafting. In this section we'll lay out our favorite places and experiences.

News from the Islands – Animal House Rescue in Jamaica

Animals are people too. This popular sentiment is one that the Sandals Foundation happens to agree with wholeheartedly. For that reason we are committed to ensuring that animal communities across the Caribbean are given the precious resources and aid they need to survive and thrive.

As part of that commitment, Sandals Foundation volunteers recently donated their time, money and muscle power to help refurbish Animal House Jamaica, a pet shelter located in Lydford, St. Ann on the island’s mountainous north shore. One of only two such refuges in the entire country, Animal House Jamaica was in need of a facelift and some crucial infrastructure upgrades in order to best serve its population of over 100 canine residents.

A motivated team of Sandals Foundation volunteers from nearby Sandals Grande Ocho Rios, Sandals Dunn’s River and Beaches Boscobel resorts spent an entire sunny, tropical day at the shelter making much-appreciated repairs and renovations. This enthusiastic group, led by Louis Grant, the General Manager of Sandals Dunn’s River, provided, among other things, a complete paint makeover, new fencing for the front yard (giving the dogs more freedom to run), and general repairs to the bathrooms. The Foundation also completely re-wired and revamped the facility’s electrical system, putting an end to the shelter’s ongoing problems with power supplies.

Now, thanks to the joint efforts of Animal House Jamaica and the Sandals Foundation, the island’s stray and abandoned pets have a brand, spanking new place to call home, nestled in the lush, green hills of paradise.

From Mobay To Negril ~ One Town At A Time ~ by John Casey - Before we begin our drive to Negril, there are a few things I want to point out. The highway we are going to be traveling is, officially, "A1." This highway actually runs between Kingston and Negril, the long way around. A few other names for this road are North Coast Highway which runs along the North Coast, and Highway 2000. It starts in Ocho Rios and ends in Negril. It is completed from Mobay to Negril but still several years from completion to Ocho Rios. Oct./05
